This is a vase I made several years ago. It was in This is a vase I made several years ago. It was initially glazed with an ash glaze on a brown clay. You can see the brown rivulets stopping at the base. The whole vase looked that brown color, pretty boring. Comparing it to my recent work, I was getting embarrassed looking at it. I have liked the response of how the Nuka glaze has been working out, so I applied some glaze and re-fired the vase. It was worth it. The brown clay is highlighted by the bright whites and blue of the new glaze. Now you see the older brown glaze as an echo of the Nuka glaze. Here are some more mugs that came out of yesterday Here are some more mugs that came out of yesterday’s kiln. Most of them are experiments. That could be the combination of glazes, the thickness of the glaze or the order of layering of the glaze. The amount of glaze put on the rim was varied as well to give a different length of white run. What great results!! As the seasons change, the fields are worked with ploughs, harrows and fertilizing vehicles. The long flowing lines of tracks break up the flat fields and reveal the contours of the land. It was a successful firing of the “Pick a mug and glaze it” evening in Sundre last Thursday. The women’s group from #Innisfail have many mugs to show for their evening of fun. Remember, #potteryclasses in #Sundre. This lidded Remember, #potteryclasses in #Sundre. This lidded pot has been heated in a special dedicated kiln. Once the black glaze develops, a salt is placed in the kiln and it vaporizes. Everything in the kiln is then covered with a thin film of material. This effect is the same as gasoline on water. The thin film reflects light from the surface and the base of the film. This bottle was made using the pinch technique. Th This bottle was made using the pinch technique. This 30 cm bottle imitates the wax drippings from a burning candle stuck in the top. I fire to cone 6 and used cone 06 glazes for their color as well as knowing they would run. This is a clay representation of Bighorn Falls whi This is a clay representation of Bighorn Falls which is on one of the tributaries of the upper Red Deer River. It is only a short hike up the gorge to see the double falls cascading into a cold pool below. For many years, two dead trees, one upright and one hanging across the river, formed a natural frame for the falls. One spring, the rivers in the area were all very high and the torrent washed the trees away. It is still an inspiring site even though it no longer has the frame. This is a favorite place for many. Several similar pictures of this scene have been published in various media in the area. With the summertime comes plenty of tourists to the mountains. There must be photos of these falls carried back to different countries around the world. With just a bit of a pause in our day, we can all see the beauty of nature around us.
