Here are some more mugs that came out of yesterday’s kiln. Most of them are experiments. That could be the combination of glazes, the thickness of the glaze or the order of layering of the glaze. The amount of glaze put on the rim was varied as well to give a different length of white run. What great results!! I have several pieces of pottery that I have accumulate that are to be Raku fired. I’m waiting for a good day of weather and some experienced help to be available at the same time. I have been a rafting guide for many years. A very sharp contrast to working with clay and offering #potteryclasses in #Sundre. I had noticed a large terracotta deposit on the south side of the river that I wanted to investigate.
I had to leave my truck on the north shore and a helper (Jaze) and I loaded up 3 inflatable kayaks. One had about 8 pails and a shovel, Jaze paddled one and finally myself in my own kayak.
It was easy to get across the river with a rope towing the nearly empty kayak and we soon got to the clay deposit.
We filled all the 5-gallon pails with this wet, sticky clay, about 1100 lbs. Loading the empty kayak and trying to head off to the other shore took a lot of pushing and pulling. It was heavy, but we made it and here is a pot fired from that clay. #Olds #Didsbury #Carstairs #Innisfail #Bowden #Reddeer #Calgary #pottery #handmade #clay

We are concerned about the loss of the planets wildlife. Have you noticed that there are very few crushed bugs on the windshield of your car after a road trip? The rate of change of the loss of our fellow inhabitants of this planet his speeded up. The pair of buffalo on the lid of this pot reference these losses. In all but a few places, buffalo are no longer roaming free. These great herds have disappeared fairly recently timewise. But the start of human caused extinctions began about 11,000 years ago. Although, sometimes we might not think it, the Neanderthals vanished earlier due to a variety of reasons. Two reasons are the competition with humans for resources and absorption into the human species.

This is a clay representation of Bighorn Falls which is on one of the tributaries of the upper Red Deer River. It is only a short hike up the gorge to see the double falls cascading into a cold pool below. For many years, two dead trees, one upright and one hanging across the river, formed a natural frame for the falls. One spring, the rivers in the area were all very high and the torrent washed the trees away. It is still an inspiring site even though it no longer has the frame. This is a favorite place for many. Several similar pictures of this scene have been published in various media in the area. With the summertime comes plenty of tourists to the mountains. There must be photos of these falls carried back to different countries around the world. With just a bit of a pause in our day, we can all see the beauty of nature around us.

Having not worked with porcelain much it was time to make a plate. Porcelain is fickle, so I heard, the plate didn’t develop the dreaded S-Crack. I’ll attribute that to luck. But after throwing this I applied porcelain orange slip and a red slip at random. The red needs some adjustments! Here in Alberta, agriculture is an important part of our economy. As the seasons change, the fields are worked with ploughs, harrows and fertilizing vehicles. The long flowing lines of tracks break up the flat fields and reveal the contours of the land. The textured surface on the cylinder gives long fluid lines for your eyes to flow over. Here are the student’s mugs from the #potteryclasses as well as the large bowl. This took more time to glaze than I hoped. I needed a good day for spraying the glaze on the bowl. When spraying glazes, the color graduations give the plate a soft look. Also, some affects are caused by the layering of glazes. When green glaze is applied first and then a white glaze applied over top, you get the large green specks. Applying the reverse gives a different result. For the fall #potteryclasses here in #Sundre, you should book now. Pottery classes are available all summer. When people start to learn pottery, you start simple then progress to more difficult. Pinch pots come first, then slab building, coil assembling and then on the wheel. Working on a wheel uses a lot of the techniques you started with. The #potteryclasses I offer here in Sundre, start with pinch pots. It is a good place to start to see when you squeeze clay, how you do it affects the direction it moves. While people are struggling with making a vase I work along with them to show how to not end up with a bowl. I connected two demonstration pinch vases quickly and created this ogre’s head. People discover that pinching clay in a controlled way is not at a kindergarten level – but maybe a grade 5!! I have pottery classes here in Sundre starting July 1st. Remember, #potteryclasses in #Sundre. This lidded pot has been heated in a special dedicated kiln. Once the black glaze develops, a salt is placed in the kiln and it vaporizes. Everything in the kiln is then covered with a thin film of material. This effect is the same as gasoline on water. The thin film reflects light from the surface and the base of the film.
